How to Calculate Breakeven Win Rate on Any Bet

Every line has a breakeven win rate. Hit it and you tread water. Miss it and you lose. Here is the formula and a reference table for every common American odds price.

Every bet you take has a breakeven win rate. Hit it and you stay flat. Miss it and the math grinds you down. Most bettors do not know what theirs is.

Here is the formula, the table, and a worked example for every common price you will see on the board.

The formula

Breakeven win rate depends only on the odds. It does not depend on which team, which sport, or how confident you feel. It is pure arithmetic.

For negative American odds (favorites):

breakeven = |odds| / (|odds| + 100)

For positive American odds (underdogs):

breakeven = 100 / (odds + 100)

Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. That is it.

Worked examples at common prices

Standard -110 line. This is the baseline price for most spreads and totals.

110 / (110 + 100) = 0.5238 = 52.38%

You need to win 52.38% of your bets at -110 just to break even. A bettor hitting exactly 50% at -110 is not breaking even, they are losing 4.5 cents on every dollar wagered.

-120 line. Slightly worse price, often seen on alternate lines or popular sides.

120 / (120 + 100) = 0.5455 = 54.55%

The extra juice raises the bar by more than two percentage points.

-150 line. A heavier favorite.

150 / (150 + 100) = 0.6000 = 60.00%

Six in ten just to tread water.

+100 (even money). Rare on sides, common on certain prop and parlay legs.

100 / (100 + 100) = 0.5000 = 50.00%

The only price where 50% is genuinely breakeven.

+200 underdog. A 2-to-1 payout.

100 / (200 + 100) = 0.3333 = 33.33%

You can lose two of every three bets and still break even.

+400 long shot.

100 / (400 + 100) = 0.2000 = 20.00%

One in five wins is enough to keep your bankroll flat.

Why most bettors lose at -110

A casual bettor hitting 50% on standard lines feels like they are doing fine. They are not. The vig charges them 4.5% of every dollar wagered.

Run the math over 1,000 bets at $100 each:

  • 500 wins return $190.91 in profit each = $95,455 won
  • 500 losses cost $100 each = $50,000 lost
  • Net: a 50% bettor at -110 over 1,000 wagers is down roughly $4,545

That is not a small leak. That is the entire reason sportsbooks exist.

To actually profit at -110 you need to clear 52.38% by enough margin to make the variance worth surviving. Most bettors who think they are running 53-55% are running 49-51% with selective memory.

The takeaway

Breakeven win rate is the single most important number to know before you place a bet. It tells you exactly what bar you have to clear, in advance, with no wishful thinking.

Look at the line. Calculate the breakeven. Compare it to your honest estimate of the true probability. If your estimate clears the breakeven by a meaningful margin, you have a bet. If it does not, you have a hand to fold.

Frequently asked questions

What is breakeven win rate in sports betting?
Breakeven win rate is the percentage of bets you need to win at given odds to neither profit nor lose money. At standard -110 lines, the breakeven is 52.38%. Any win rate above that is profitable; below it loses money long-term.
How do I calculate breakeven win rate from American odds?
For negative odds: breakeven = |odds| / (|odds| + 100). For positive odds: breakeven = 100 / (odds + 100). Convert any line in seconds. Multiply by 100 to get the percentage.
Why is breakeven 52.38% on -110 lines?
Because 110 / (110 + 100) = 0.5238. The extra juice the sportsbook charges (the vig) raises the bar above 50%. Hitting 50% on -110 loses 4.5 cents per dollar wagered over time.
What breakeven do I need on +200 underdog bets?
33.33%. The formula is 100 / (200 + 100) = 0.3333. You can lose two thirds of these bets and still break even because each win pays double your stake.
Does breakeven win rate include the vig?
Yes. The vig is baked into the line itself. The breakeven calculation uses the offered odds, which already include the sportsbook's commission. That is exactly why the breakeven on a fair coin flip line is above 50%.
